The brand’s core technology, the TEMPUR® material, has its origins in space technology. In the late 1960s, NASA scientists developed a completely new material specifically to cushion the immense pressure experienced by astronauts during test flights. TEMPUR optimized and innovated upon this material, initially applying it in the medical sector before transitioning it to consumer use. In 1998, the TEMPUR® material was inducted into the Space Technology Hall of Fame by the US Space Foundation. The brand has established research and development centers, engineering facilities and manufacturing plants in the United States and Denmark.

In 2023, the company launched the Pro series of mattresses, utilizing a new generation of TEMPUR material to enhance the sleeping experience and improve pressure relief by 20 percent, whilst also securing the OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN eco-label. In 2025, the group acquired the US mattress retailer Mattress Firm Group Inc. and officially announced its rebranding as Somnigroup International Inc., becoming the world’s largest bedding group and signaling a new era for the global sleep industry.
